Role of Creativity in Early Brain Development

  • 15 November 2018

Children’s brains are wonderful powerhouses that grow in response to creative environment. One of the reasons why children learn heuristically and holistically is because they go through unique experiences. The brain, in early childhood, makes billions of new connections with every single bit of knowledge that is taken in, in order to make sense of it. According to child psychologists, the process of brain development through acquiring knowledge and developing creativity is most prolifically active between the age of three and five. Thus, we, at the JP International School, believe that creative experiences are more critical in the early years for the development of healthy brains and well-rounded personalities than at any other time during the rest of the childhood and adulthood.

At JPIS, Noida, we have seen that these critical experiences that include imaginative and cultural opportunities help children to build contexts, discover the meaning of different aspects of life, and deepen their understanding. In the way the DNA makes us unique genetically, the creative abilities uniquely make us who we are spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally, and in this way, hold the key to our personalities. It is a proven fact that a healthy and creative environment in the early years of life leads to the development of a well-rounded mind, which is something we all hope to see in our children. Let us delve a bit deeper into the matter to better understand the connection between the role of creativity and early brain development.

Multiple studies have uncovered important long term impacts of creative environments, highlighting how the activities related to different art forms can encourage positive relationships to support the rapid blooming of the synapses of the brain. It leads to the formation of a comprehensive mind, good attachment, better mental health, and self-esteem.

Research has shown how some musical approaches can activate the same areas of the brain that also get activated during mathematical processing. Speaking in scientific terms, the early musical training starts to build the same neural networks that are later used for solving numerical calculations. On our part, we have noticed that the children who are exposed to musical teachings from a young age also find it easy to accomplish language learning and development. This fact is also evident in the way how several methods of music education are recognized internationally, for instance, Kodaly, Suzuki, and the likes, are made to provide children stage-based structured musical activities from an early age. We further believe that it is also immensely useful for children with special educational needs as they get to achieve greater engagement in learning and an enhancement in their academic achievement.

In a similar manner, drama can stimulate the same synapses as spoken language and is a great tool in ensuring proper articulation in children. Painting stimulates the visual processing systems that help to recall memory and build imagination. Activities like clay modeling and drawing are linked to the growth of fine and gross motor skills. The reason for us to be in favor of engaging children in creative activities from an early age is that the synapses that are predisposed to the imagination, linguistic, and auditory skills get pruned if children are denied of creative experiences and it becomes difficult to reconnect the synapses further down the line.

Though the connections between the different parts of the brain and various creative experiences are far complex to be explained in simple terms, it suffices to say that such positive links exist. It is hence important on our part to aid in the better establishment of such connections through involving our children in creative activities early on in their lives. We, at the JP International School, not only encourage the parents to motivate children to partake in different creative activities but also do our bid through the varied extra-curricular activities organized in school. At our institution, children can take part in numerous creative activities of their liking, ranging from music, elocution, and drawing, to much more. Our aim lies in not just making the children shine academically but to ensure that an all-encompassing development is achieved, and that is only possible through the progress of their creative and intellectual sides. This is exactly what we, at JPIS, being one of the Top CBSE Schools in Greater Noida, hope to attain through our advanced curriculum and contemporary pedagogy, which extends the right blend of theoretical and practical learning to nurture both the academic learning, as well as the creative skills of children.
