Tips to Enable Your Child to Grow into an Independent Thinker

  • 29 May 2019

The purpose of education should not remain limited to the passing of knowledge from one source to another. Instead, it should have the ability to lend students the capacity to think independently. At JP international School, we believe that it is imperative for each kid learns to be able to think on its own without having a shadow of the ideas that he/she comes across in the daily life. Even if the idea appears to be weird on the first hand, individuality must be encouraged to support the guts. After all, it is in the independence of thinking that lies the true spirit of freedom. It is because of this reason that we strongly feel the need to raise kids as independent thinkers. Here, we are sharing some of the ways that can be immensely helpful in rearing up the kids in the right way so as enable them to think out of the box.

Have routine discussions with your child

Allow your child to speak up his/her mind. It is of paramount importance that they first learn to overcome the mental barriers and then gather enough courage to say what they feel like. It is evitable that when someone attempts to say something new or out of the box, the orator generally faces an initial resistance from the listeners owing to the clash between the prevalent ideas and the fresh ones. If a kid is allowed to speak freely, it makes the kid free from the fear of resistance and encourages the young mind to think its own way. Ask your child about the day at school or the experience he/she had during a vacation and let the child explain every feeling, every excitement, and every concern unleashing its extent of mind.

Be a good listener

Having a discussion always means a mutual involvement ensuring the attention of the listener as well. When your child speaks to you about even regular things, pay complete attention and never discourage him/her. This will make the child feel its importance and would propel him/her to get into further discussions, sometimes even at the cost of storming his/her brain for new ideas to be added to the conversations. Whenever your child puts an effort to cross the limits of the obvious, cheer him/her and motivate to get deeper. This would help the child to grow confident in thinking independently.

Let your kid find the way out

Whenever you child faces a problem and comes to you for help, extend your assistance but do not show him/her the way to solve it, rather, suggest the kid find a solution putting individual efforts. This would not only help the kid grow wiser but will also help the child to decide over things when in trouble, capacitating the kid to handle grave situations without any help in the future. When children attempt to solve the intricacies involved with a given situation, he/she tend to spontaneously come up with fresh ideas resultant upon a unique thinking process.

Ask your child to write

Suggest your kid to write down experiences, stories, opinions and much more that can be put into words. This habit of writing often turns out to be a game-changer in making a person think independently. If the little one is not feeling comfortable to speak up all the time, writing down his/her mind in a diary could be a great way to encourage innovating thinking as well. It also helps the child to develop the skill of analyzing an incident, phenomenon, or practice in more detail.

At JP International School, ranked as the Best CBSE School in Greater Noida, we believe that every child is special and is born with the capacity to think separately from each other. The same potential for unique thinking should be encouraged by parents at home and teachers at school.
