Tips to Raise Your Child as a Self - Learner

  • 15 November 2019

If there’s one thing that most parents have in common, it is the feeling of care that they hold towards their children. However, in the quest of caring for the kids, it so happens at times that the caring attitude of parents turns into over caring, shadowing the children every time, everywhere. But just as plants need exposure to sunlight to grow, even children fail to grow to their fullest potential if the parents always shadow them. Children definitely need a gentle nudge and encouragement from the parents, but since it is them who have to travel the path, it is necessary that they learn to manage their own time, and particularly learning, independently. It is necessary to instill in them age-appropriate life skillsthat aid their transformation into self-sufficient individuals.

But how exactly can we do that is a question that many parents put forth. So here, in this article today, we will be sharing a few tips on how to raise children into self-learners.

Stop spoon-feeding your child

First and foremost thing that parents must do to build a self-learning child is to stop spoon-feeding in every possible way. Clarifying doubts and explaining concepts is fine, but taking control of each and everything they learn and going overboard in teaching them to discourage the independent thought process of the young minds. It has been found that children who are too much supervised by their parents when it comes to academics tend to withdraw from learning on their own. It is hence important that though parents guide their children through the learning process, they provide them with the flexibility to embrace the process at their own pace and will.

Make them adopt the habit of reading

Reading, as many say, is not just a habit that improves vocabulary and literacy skills; but it aids in improving the overall cognitive development in children. When you develop in your child the love for reading, you basically enhance their tendency of learning. The more the children find it easier to read and understand, the better they become at self-learning. This is because reading trains the brain to process concepts/ideas much more fluently, which thereby aids in improving the ability to learn.

Focus on learning, not the performance

Even though academic performance and learning outcomes are important, putting the focus on the overall learning experience benefitsa lot. This way, children feel the need for actual learning rather than learning merely for grades and rewards.

Help children to stay organized

It is important to teach childrenself-organizing skills as they form the basis for self-learning.Let themorganize their stuff like school supplies, books, and assignmentson their own at home. Do not go overboard and get frustrated if the things don’t appear as organized as you would have done for them. What’s important is to make them learn. Hence, be patient and consistent in teaching them the art of organizing. Do motivate them and guide them whenever and wherever needed, but let them take control and do it all on their own.

Foster creativity

While spending time with your children is necessary, it is equally important to provide them with their own space to bloom. Let themput their fabulous imaginations to use. Allow them to have their independent playtime where theythink, create, and entertain themselves, all by their own. It will help them to revamp their brain and come up with their own novel ideas.

Studies have revealed that self-learners are capable of building life skills and cognitive skills much more effectively. It helps them to adapt to changes, tune out distractions, concentrate better, and retrieve learned concepts more efficiently to apply in real-life situations.
