Has Your Child got Internet Addiction? Here’s What to Do!!

  • 8 August 2019

Science and technology have changed the ways we lead our life. Over the last few decades, the revolutionizing inventions in the field of technology have changed our lifestyle dramatically. However, the internet can be regarded as the most influential amongst all of these. Apart from impacting the adults, it has also taken the children within its grasp. Studies have revealed that kids belonging to the age group of 8 to 18 are getting considerably impacted by internet usage. The time that children of this age group earlier used to spend on outdoor games and storybook readings has now all gone to browsing and surfing. Many kids sacrifice their hours of sleep to stay connected to the internet. While engrossed in the internet, children generally tend to lose track of time, which further results in time mismanagement. If you want your kid to stay out of such an addictive practice, here are some of the tips that can help you bring your child back to an active life.

Understanding the severity of the situation

Once you realize that either your kid is already an internet addict or is becoming one gradually, take immediate actions to restrict your child from further diving down. The first thing you should consider doing is to try and understand the intensity of the addiction. Now, approach the child accordingly to make him/her understand the need to stay away from this practice. Do not be harsh or extremely restrictive. The best way to get the child into confidence would be to suggest a downsizing of the screen time and not a complete denial to the access. This moderate approach helps more than any restrictive step.

Express your emotions and concerns

Many times, it so happens that when alienated from the family, children find refuge in the internet-driven devices. Gradually, the temporary seclusion becomes a full-time engagement and affinity turns into an addiction. Hence, make sure that you do express your emotions and concerns to your kid to make him/her feel cared and connected. This helps in maintaining a healthy parent-child relationship, which is very effective in keeping any undesirable element away from the kid. This is also useful in winning the trust of the kids and to make them abide by your advice. If you notice any sudden change of behaviour, declining grades, and lack of concentration in your child, find out the cause and fix it instead of scolding them. Words of logic often turn out more impactful than words of anger.

Set rules for the child to follow

Instead of adopting extreme policies like forbidding the child to use the computer or denying access to digital games, tender ways are the best when it comes to checking behavioural issues arising out of compulsive practices. If you wish your child to stay away from the internet when not needed, make certain rules and regulations and make them understand the importance of those. The logical explanations often do wonders. Instead of not allowing them to use the computer at all, allow them to use it for a restricted time every day. This helps in reshaping the practices and turning addiction into a necessity-based choice.

We, at JP International School, one among the Top Rated Schools in Greater Noida, believe that the purpose of education is fulfilled only when it is relevant and contextual. Our top-notch infrastructural facilities within the campus allow technology-supported learning and teaching. However, we never forget to teach our pupils the art of keeping a balance between technology and nature. Regular sports activities, special yoga classes, library classes, art and creativity classes, and interactive classes which are conducted out in nature are some of the arrangements with which we have been keeping our students connected with nature. This is why instead of enjoying computer-supported learning at the school, our students do not turn out to be obsessive about the use of the internet. Our motto at JPIS has been to introduce the latest technologies to augment the traditional methods of learning, and we take due care that the former does not overlap the latter in any way.
